Position Summary: Under direction of the Lead Mechanic and oversight of the Maintenance Manager, this position performs vehicle, equipment and facility inspections, servicing, repairs, and related activities, with emphasis on safety, efficiency, and responsiveness to operational needs. The Bus Mechanic I is distinguished from the Bus Mechanic II position by the further complexity of work assignments performed under minimal supervision along with having more experience than the Bus Mechanic II position.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
• Examine vehicles, facilities, equipment and discuss with supervisors the nature and extent of damage or malfunction.
• Develop an appropriate repair plan and work procedure
• Raise vehicle with hoist or jacks to gain access to mechanical units underneath the vehicle and then safely support with stands
• Remove components such as engines, transmissions, or differentials
• Disassemble components and inspect parts for wear
• Repair or replace parts such as pistons, rods, gears, valves, and bearings
• Troubleshoot and repair ignition system, lights, instruments, and circuit boards
• Reline and adjust brakes, repair, or replace shock absorbers and air suspension components
• Replace and adjust headlights, and install, diagnose, and repair accessories such as radios, Audio Video Language systems, mobile video recording systems, heaters, mirrors, and windshield wipers
• Fabricate tools, parts and repair items using cutting torch, various types of welders, plasma torch and other machine tools
• Adjust and/or replace belts and hoses
• Inspect, troubleshoot, and repair diesel, compressed natural gas, high- pressure fuel systems, battery electric powered vehicles, 2 and 4 stroke small engine powered equipment
• Inspect, troubleshoot, and repair air system components such as compressors, dryers, switches, check valves, regulators, brake chambers, and air brake ABS system components
• Inspect, troubleshoot, and repair hydraulic brake system components such as hydro-boosters, ABS valves, ABS sensors and controllers
• Inspect, troubleshoot, repair, or replace air brake chambers, air brake valves, and air brake ABS system components
• Inspect, troubleshoot, and repair hydraulic system components such as pumps, valves, and motors
• Read and understand electrical schematics, troubleshoot traditional and multiplex electrical circuits, relays, switches, fuses, and breakers
• Clean and test various types of lead acid, absorbed glass mat and Iron Phosphate batteries
• Inspect, troubleshoot, and repair electric and pneumatic door systems, emergency egress windows and hatches, fire suppression systems, and methane gas detection systems
• Evacuate and charge air-conditioning systems using a refrigerant reclaimer and micron gauge.
• Check air-conditioning system for leaks using nitrogen
• Troubleshoot air-conditioning relay boards, control modules, fan, and evaporator motors
• Remove and rotate tires; accurately adjust wheel bearings
• Use handheld and PC based diagnostic tools to obtain and read codes from engine, transmission, occupant restraint system, and antilock brake system
• Use a PC to open and read manuals, conduct self-directed training, look up parts, review vehicle maintenance history files, and open, update and close work orders
• Read and understand written and online repair manuals and parts books
• Respond to calls from bus operators reporting mechanical malfunctions and make necessary road repairs, or tow the vehicle back to the shop for more intensive repairs
• Keep accurate written and computer records of time, materials used, and thorough notes of work performed during repairs
• Operate various snow removal equipment such as but not limited to tractor, snow blower, vehicle mounted snowplow, shovel, ice melt spreader
• Perform service, trouble shooting and repairs to agency facilities and equipment, components, and systems
• Performs other duties as assigned
Education & Experience:
Minimum of a High School Diploma or GED, any higher education is desired. Minimum of five years of mechanical experience in transit, medium/heavy duty truck, automotive, related trade school or a combination of any of these preferred.
Certificates, Licenses, and Registrations:
• Must possess or be willing to acquire within 12 months of hire date a Class “B” State of Washington or Oregon Commercial Drivers’ License, with passenger and airbrake endorsements. Valley Transit will supply required training, employee will cover all costs related to testing and license fees, CDL physical cost is reimbursable as per stated in current Collective Bargaining Agreement.
• Freon handlers’ certificate in accordance with 40 CFR Part 82, Subpart F under section 608 of the Clean Air Act
• Must possess or be willing to acquire First Aid/CPR certificate, forklift operator certificate
• ASE Certifications in any of the areas of Automobile, Medium-Heavy Trucks, School Bus, and/or Transit Bus is preferred
• As regulations change, incumbents are expected to obtain the State or Federal mandated certificates required to work on certain vehicles, vehicle systems or to handle hazardous materials
Language Skills
• Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, procedure manuals and the ability to write routine reports and correspondence.
• Must be able to communicate both verbally and in writing in the English language.
Mathematical Skills
• Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.
• Must possess or be willing to acquire within 12 months of hire date an EPA-approved
Tools or Equipment: Successful candidate must possess a Journeyman level set of hand tools and a rollaway toolbox.

• Basic knowledge of Microsoft Excel, Word, and Outlook software programs

Working Conditions & Environment:
Work is performed both inside and outside in both good and inclement weather. This position may be exposed to dust, exhaust fumes, wetness, chemical spray, cleaning agents, excessive cold and hot weather. The Bus Mechanic I may be assigned to work varying shifts around the clock including split shifts along with the possibility of being called in to work outside regular scheduled shifts to address vehicle, facility, or equipment issues. This position requires dealing with other employees and the public in a positive manner that generates goodwill for the Agency and teamwork among employees.
Wages and Benefits:
Employees working in this job classification are represented by the Amalgamated Transit Union and are subject to agency shop rules. The salary range for this position is $34.32 - $40.84 per hour, plus any applicable ASE certifications, plus longevity steps at more than four (4) years of service, eight (8) years of service, twelve (12) years of service, sixteen (16) years of service, and thirty (30) years of service.
Valley Transit provides “employee-only” fully paid premiums for medical, dental, life and long-term disability through the Public Employees Benefits Board (PEBB). Qualifying dependents may be enrolled at the employee’s expense; these premiums are determined annually subject to the Employer Contribution Cap and Employer Pooling Assistance. A $24,000 Basic Life insurance policy is provided through the Washington Counties Insurance Fund. Employer and employee contributions are made to the State of Washington Public Employees Retirement System (PERS). Employees have the option to enroll in the State of Washington Department of Retirement System’s deferred Compensation program. Employees also have the option to enroll in additional benefits which include Employee-Paid Long-Term Disability, Employee-Paid Flexible Benefits through American Family Life Assurance Company (AFLAC) and additional Employee-Paid Life Insurance coverage through MetLife.
Valley Transit Paid Vacation for Extra Board employees accrues at a rate of .046150 per eligible paid hour; the accrual rate increases with continuous employment. All employees are eligible to accrue Washington Paid Sick Leave at a rate of 1 hour for every 40 hours worked, in addition, employees will accrue Valley Transit Paid Sick Leave at a rate of .02115 per eligible paid hour. In addition, Extra Board employees will accrue Holiday Leave at a rate of .023077 per eligible paid hour and Floating Holiday Leave will accrue at a rate of .011538 per eligible paid hour both accrual rates increase with continuous employment. Valley Transit provides limited reimbursement for the purchase of job-related clothing and supplies depending on the job classification.
